Fishing
Fishing in the streams and lakes of the mountains is a rewarding challenge for skilled fishermen, and a lot of fun for the less experienced.
The Tumbarumba Shire contains some good fishing lakes:: Mannus Lake near
Tumbarumba township; Paddy's River Dam in the Bago Forest ; and Khancoban
Pondage. Within easy driving distance from Tumbarumba and Khancoban are
Talbingo Reservoir and Tooma Dam, storage reservoirs for the Snowy
Mountains Scheme.
The secret of summer fishing in the region is the constant influx of cold
water from the mountains, making the temperature ideal for trout.
Popular streams are Paddy's River, Tumbarumba Creek, Tooma River, the Swampy Plains River near Khancoban (including a Blue ribbon trout stream - the lower Swampy Plains River).
The Khancoban TroutFest is a week long competition held in November.
The Murray River flows past the village of Jingellic, where there is a public recreation reserve suitable for camping behind the historic Bridge Hotel.
